    DESIGN Custom Food Boats

    description

Custom food boats are a unique addition to the custom food packaging market. The global packaging market was valued at $48.17 billion in 2025. It is projected to reach $81.04 billion by 2034. The food and beverage segment holds a 32.67% share in 2026. This makes food packaging the single largest category in the entire packaging industry. We can observe a clear reality that packaging is an essential part of food businesses more than ever.

Despite the fact that packaging holds significant benefits for companies, there are several businesses that still use generic packaging. Your generic packaging communicates nothing about your brand, and you will not be able to create any brand recognition. This will not transfer any value to your business and build no loyalty. Generic food paper boats are a missed opportunity for meal producers to cater to companies.

Nonetheless, custom-printed food boats change this equation. Every custom boat that leaves the counter is a marketing opportunity for your brand. From dimensions to grammar and printed designs, everything will be in your hands with customization options.

    What Are Custom Food Boats?

A food boat has an open top and boat-shaped packaging tray that is designed to hold and serve the food directly to the customers. They have an elongated shape with folded and locked side walls. Custom food boats wholesale are the standard serving format for:

    • French fries and fried snack foods
    • Hot dogs and sausages
    • Nachos and loaded fries
    • Popcorn and dry snack products
    • Street food items, including gyros and falafels
    • Festival and event food service
    • Quick service restaurant side and snack portions

Unlike food trays, food boats have raised and locked side walls. This shape allows a secure presentation of food in one hand. From mobile and casual dining to walking customers, they offer a perfect packaging option. We manufacture these boats in exact dimensions and design specifications to allow you to use them as a brand representative. At our company, custom paper food boats are die-cut and scored with calibrated fold lines. We also use food-grade paperboard for food safety.

    Materials

The structure and food safety compliance of boats are determined based on the material quality. Aside from this, the print quality and sustainability also depend on your material selection. The selection of wrong material in food packaging is not a minor error; it is a risk to your brand name. A poor-quality material may tear under a loaded portion or leak due to grease. All these things will communicate the opposite of what a quality food brand intends. The three paper-based materials that we use in food boat manufacturing are as follows:

    Solid Bleached Sulfate Paperboard

This is a premium material used for direct food contact. Solid bleach sulfate is manufactured from bleached virgin wood pulp via a chlorine-free process. In this process, lignin is removed from the cellulose fiber matrix to give pure white and odor-free pulp. The bleaching process creates smooth pulp with strong hydrogen interchain networks between the hydroxyl groups on adjacent glucose units. This structure has:

    • High tensile strength
    • Excellent dimensional stability
    • Zero risk of off-taste migration into the food product

The best feature about SBS is that it is free from contaminants and residual ink. So you can use it directly to pack food. We also combine SBS material with appropriate coatings so that you can use them to pack hot and greasy food items.

    Folding Boxboard

It is a multilayer paperboard that delivers excellent mechanical strength even at a low grammage. You can select a single ply of material and give an excellent level of durability to your boats. Groundwood pulp makes the center ply that is sandwiched between bleached outer layers.  The cross-linked aromatic polypropylene polymer network of lignin gives structural rigidity, and the outer bleached plies maintain food safety and compliance. You will achieve boats with high stiffness with less material. This makes it an economical option for brands running on a low budget.

    Kraft Paperboard

Virgin southern pine woods are used to manufacture kraft paper. This material is produced via the kraft process, which gives a high degree of polymerization and exceptional tear resistance. To make the paper printable, a clay coating is applied over the natural brown kraft base. The long pine fibers give tear resistance and strength. This paper is also suitable for wet food items where structural failure under load is a genuine operational risk.

There are bleached kraft options as well that have slightly less durability. Nonetheless, white Kraft still has the durability to resist tearing. These types of kraft paper boats are easy to print. You can choose any of the options and get the attention of climate-conscious individuals.

    Grammage Selection

Grammage of paper is measured in grams per square meter that determines whether the food boat maintains its structural integrity or not.  The selection of an insufficient GSM for a given food application is a common and costly mistake. A food boat that softens or loses its shape before the customer has finished eating is not a packaging failure alone. It is a brand failure that the customer directly experiences and associates with the quality of the food business.

The standard grammage ranges for custom food boats, paperboard are:

    Application Type Recommended GSM Range
Lightweight dry snack foods (popcorn, chips) 230 to 280 GSM
Standard quick service (fries, hot dogs) 280 to 320 GSM
Loaded or sauced portions (nachos, loaded fries) 320 to 370 GSM
Catering and event service (extended hold time) 370 to 450 GSM

Food businesses that are unsure about the correct packaging for their specific food and service environment can book a free consultation with our packaging team. This is the single most impactful specification in the food boat to retain product quality and service integrity.

    Printing Methods To Attract Customers

The print on the food paper is the main thing that communicates about the brand and grabs customer attention. If your logo is washed out or the printed design is off-hue, then you can never impress the customers with the quality of your service. The print quality on custom printed food boats is part of your brand quality. There are multiple options for printing, but flexography is the major option that is used on paper boats:

    Flexographic Printing

This is a standard printing method that is used at a commercial scale. It uses flexible plates and fast-drying inks. Flexography is compatible with UV and water base dinks that are food-grade and vibrant. You will get sharp graphics and cost-effective designs without breaking the bank on printing plates.

    CMYK vs. PMS Color Systems

The selection of the color system determines the print quality and color accuracy. It affects the color reproduction and unit cost of printed paper boats. Below is the table that will let you know which one will be a suitable option for your custom logo food boats

    Factor CMYK PMS
Best use Photo prints Logo design
Color accuracy Medium accuracy Exact matching
Cost level Lower cost Higher cost
    Consistency Slight variation High consistency
Branding strength Moderate impact Strong identity

At our company, we use a hybrid approach. So you will get a complex design in photographic quality and with the exact hues of your brand. We produce complex artwork with CMYK, and PMS is our choice for brand-exact colors.

    Coatings Selection To Impact Durability

Coatings are a functional addition to the packaging. Brands can use coatings on the interior of food boats and enhance the grease and moisture resistance of the packaging. Besides this, it is the coating that impacts the temperature tolerances and recyclability profile of personalized food trays:

Coating or Finish Function Key Consideration
PE coating Moisture and grease barrier Non-recyclable in most facilities
PFAS-free coating Grease-resistant barrier Regulatory compliant and food safe
PLA coating Compostable barrier Low heat resistance, best for cold or ambient food
PET coating Heat-resistant barrier Suitable for ovenable and frozen applications
Aqueous coating Water-based light barrier Recyclable, suitable for dry and ambient food
Clay coating Smooth, high-gloss print surface Enhances print quality, no barrier function
Die cutting and scoring Precise fold and assembly lines Prevents cracking on the fold during high-speed assembly
Emboss and deboss Raised or recessed design elements Adds tactile premium quality to brand presentation
Hot foil stamping Metallic transfer print Premium metallic finish for high-end positioning
Perforation lines Controlled tear separation Portion separation and user convenience
QR code and variable data printing Digital traceability and marketing Enables track and trace and customer engagement

    Industry Applications

Food paper boats are used in a huge variety of food settings. Especially fast food restaurants use this packaging to quickly serve food to their customers. The common applications in the food sector are as follows:

    • Quick service restaurants and fast food
    • Street food and food festival operations
    • Bakery and confectionery
    • Food delivery and meal kit services
